CONCEPT SCHOOL DESIGN

Can a single roof unify a series of separate buildings while protecting the spaces between them?
Commissioned by Education Consultants Bryanston Square, this concept school design brings together a series of open-plan timber buildings beneath a large, sweeping glulam canopy. The roof acts as a protective sail, linking the different department buildings while sheltering the external circulation routes between them from rain and sun. Students are able to move freely between departments under cover, encouraging interaction and a sense of cohesion.
The individual buildings are arranged in response to site context and educational requirements, while the canopy provides a unifying architectural language. Generous use of natural timber throughout the glulam structure and surrounding buildings establishes warmth and tactility, reinforcing a human scale appropriate for learning environments. Carefully positioned openings within the canopy allow daylight to filter down, animating walkways and shared spaces while maintaining a strong connection to the outdoors.
Sustainability underpins the design approach. Timber is selected for its low embodied carbon, structural efficiency, and longevity, supporting a resilient and environmentally responsible school model. The result is an open, connected learning environment that feels both sheltered and expansive, where the architecture enables movement, collaboration and everyday school life to unfold naturally beneath a single protective roof.
