PENFORD STREET

Can a contemporary house respond sensitively to a tightly constrained site?

Working closely with our planning consultant, we developed this scheme for a new house in Camberwell after a previous application had been refused. The design carefully addresses the limitations of the site, splitting the house between a sunken and a raised ground floor to maximise space, light and area. A two-level courtyard garden creates a sequence of distinct moments, bringing light and calm into the heart of the home. Externally, the house picks up on the heights and materials of the existing architectural frontages, mirroring the street’s asymmetrical window pattern, two and one, and using limestone cladding to sit comfortably within its context. Internally, generous natural light is drawn in from every available angle, creating a sense of openness throughout.

“Forward looking with a holistic sense of design.”
